Mark 6:12-13 So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them. (ESV)
Jesus sends out the twelve in pairs giving them His (not their own, inherent) authority to perform the works of the kingdom (v. 7). Repentance is a core element in proclamation of the good news, along with accompanying works of healing and exorcism (taking back territory from the enemy). It is also interesting to note that Jesus tells them to bring no money and no provisions, and to base their ministry in each town out of a single house that receives them.
How many of us would take this seriously today? No, conventional wisdom would say that if you want to a church plant to be successful, it takes a ton of cash! But Jesus instructions to the twelve involves going into a town or village, operating a home based ministry focused on proclamation of the good news about Jesus, and accompanying works of the kingdom. Would I be willing to actually go out on mission with nothing in my hand, in complete and utter dependence on God for even my most basic needs: “and his disciples followed him.” (6:1)
Lord Jesus, I am challenged. My faith is called to account. Teach me to do the works of the kingdom with nothing in my hand but dunamis* from the Spirit. Teach me Lord. Let this message sink into my soul.
In Jesus’ name – Amen,
Son
