Matthew 11:25 “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; (ESV)
The Kingdom of God turns everything on its head. The wisest of religious leaders reject the Messiah and His kingdom, so Jesus’ followers end up being the most rag-tag bunch of misfits, losers, regular average Joe’s without much to offer, broken people, sinners turned world changers! The kingdom of God is such a radical departure that the least in this new kingdom is greater than the greatest of the prophets of the old covenant (v. 11).
Jesus’ invitation is one of complete surrender (see v. 28) such that it is likened to rest (v. 29). His yoke is His teaching, but compared to Pharisaic Second Temple Judaism it is described as “easy” and “light.”
Jesus invites us: “Come to Me,” “Follow Me,” Become my disciple. Follow my teaching. It is the way of kindness. Come and embrace my kingdom and I will remove your burden and give you rest for your weary soul (v. 29).
I want to follow You, King Jesus. Will You teach me? Holy Spirit will You flood me with conviction, passion to please my glorious King; To give encouragement to the poor (v. 5). To lift up my brother who has fallen on the roadside along the way. Bring Your kingdom Lord God, here, now.
In Jesus’ name – Amen,
