Hosea 8:4 They made kings, but not through me.
They set up princes, but I knew it not.
With their silver and gold they made idols
for their own destruction. (ESV)
What happens when we establish leadership structures without hearing (it) from God (first)? An idolatry that destroys us? Do we then become useless vessels among the nations (v. 8)? Have we built palaces but forgotten our God and maker (v. 14)?
Could this describe the institutional church in the west? “Give us charismatic leaders Lord to inspire us!” Is Jesus still head of the church? Have we turned our places of worship into weekly playgrounds of christian entertainment? No wonder the church is dying in the west. No wonder people are leaving in droves. Our focus is internal – “Come and be part of us!” Not “Go and tell” but “invite your friends.” We have lost our sense of sent-ness (John 20:21). We are no longer a missional people that gathers regularly for worship, fellowship, teaching & prayer, and then scatters to go and make disciples of Him. But there is a remnant who longs for something more, deeper. And others still who have a growing sense that something is desperately wrong but we can’t quite put our finger on it.
Jesus, I declare Your kingship over me, my family, my church and any who might follow. Send us Lord. Send me. I will go. Equip me Lord with the power of the Holy Spirit and a message of good news burning in my heart. Come Lord Jesus. Come Holy Spirit of God.
In Jesus’ name – Amen,
